The path of Tropical Storm Tomas takes it over Haiti

Pastors and members of congregations in Lutheran Church–Canada are urged to pray for Lutheran brothers and sisters, and for all refugees in Haiti. Weather forecasts predict that Tropical Storm Tomas may strike the country later this week, November 3-5.

Thousands of people, including many Lutherans lost their homes and churches in the January earthquake. Overall, about one million poor Haitians still suffer miserably in makeshift housing in refugee camps, which are extremely vulnerable to a tropical storm or hurricane and its aftermath.

“During my visit in September I saw so many people living only in tents, literally deprived of everything but hope to have their lives rebuilt” reports Rev. Dr. Leonardo Neitzel, Lutheran Church–Canada’s mission executive. “To have such a storm hit those people will bring misery upon misery and make the work of the dedicated relief workers more difficult.”

Dr. John Wilch, president of Haiti Lutheran Mission Society asks people to “pray that the storm may steer clear of Haiti and that any effects of it there will be minimal.”
