A pastor had just celebrated an early Easter morning service at one point of his dual parish, and was on his way now to conduct the service at his second congregation. Suddenly, his car gave a groan and a bang, finally coming to a stop. St. Luke tells us the women went to Jesus’ tomb at “deep dawn.” That’s not exactly what most translations say, but the Greek word usually translated as “early” can also be translated as “deep.” Deep dawn, as in “it is always darkest just before the dawn.” At deep dawn the light and the dark are very close together. If I don’t keep my nasal passages moist with saline solution, I can count on drawing blood when I blow my nose. And I’ve had some bloody noses in my time! Sometimes …

As District President, this is probably the last devotional article I will write for The Canadian Lutheran. Our District will soon have its newly elected president to look to, as well the Interim Pastoral Leader to be appointed by Synod.
I have served in the ministry for 39 years; the last fifteen years have been in the office of District President. In 1976, I attended my first District Convention as a newly-minted seminary graduate in what was then called the Ontario District. At the Convention banquet, the guest speaker …

“And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.” (1 Corinthians 2:3)
Did you ever stop to think that recognizing your own weaknesses and inadequacies is a first and necessary step to becoming strong? It is no proof of spiritual advancement when you feel that you yourself are capable of doing anything for God. For when Christ gave His warning to the members of the Church in Laodicea in the Book of Revelation, He wrote: “When you say, ‘I am rich, I have prospered, and …
