When I was pastor at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Barrie, Ontario, the children and youth, with the assistance of some adults, presented a Christmas pageant entitled, “This is So Embarrassing!”
The pageant starts with a youth complaining about having to dress in his father’s bathrobe. Another youth grumbles about having to be a Wiseman yet again. Others find it embarrassing that they have to dress in silly costumes—halos, wings, and fuzzy caps with sheep ears. After lamenting their situation, the youthful pageant participants shout, “This …

I was born and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. During my “formative years” my family attended and were members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church located at Grand River and Whitcomb on what is known as the West side of Detroit. I and my three sisters attended elementary school at Holy Cross as well. Every Christmas Eve, all the children in the school took part in the Worship Service or Pageant which consisted of “living scenes” from the Bible, chronicling some of the major prophecies pointing to our Messiah’s …

In his book Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis devotes a section to Christian behaviour. One chapter of this section is entitled “The Great Sin.” He writes: “There is one vice of which no man in the world is free; which everyone in the world loathes when he sees it in someone else…. Warning notices are constantly announced and displayed “to drive carefully” as children walk, ride their bikes, or board buses to be taken to the schools every morning and brought back home every afternoon.
Once …

The genius of Martin Luther was his recognition that there was only one way the Spirit of the Lord would reform, renew, and revive a lifeless, stagnant church and that was to get Jesus’ followers to read, study, inwardly digest, and proclaim God’s Word! Luther was not interested in dismantling and reconstructing the Roman Catholic’s corporate and ecclesiastical structure—except where it deviated from God’s Word. His priority was not to develop a Christian nation state, although he trusted that the Word of God would reshape, renew, and …

You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in Your bottle. You have recorded each one in Your book. (Psalm 56:8)
Upon attending the visitation at the funeral home for a dear friend and one of my many “fathers” in the faith, my wife and I were greeted in the line of family members by one of the gentleman’s daughters. As we conversed, she shared with me her recollection of the words of Scripture that referred to our tears being put into a bottle …
