OTTAWA – On June 15, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled against Trinity Western University (TWU), which was seeking to have the law societies of Ontario and British Columbia’s refusal to accredit graduates of TWU’s proposed new law school overturned. The societies had stated they would not accredit graduates of TWU, an Evangelical Christian university, because of the school’s community covenant, which prohibits sexual intimacy outside heterosexual marriage.

At the meeting of Lutheran Church–Canada’s (LCC) Board of Directors on April 26, 2018, the board voted to approve a motion to change the names of its three regions (currently districts) to reflect the new structure of the organization. As of January 1, 2019, the three LCC Districts: ABC District will be known as West Region; Central District will be known as the Central Region, and East District will be known as East Region.

The Odessa Seminary in Ukraine hosted its graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 9th where four students received their theological diplomas after completing a three-year course together. Dr. James Gimbel of Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Edmonton and Dr. Wilhelm Torgerson of Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Catharines attended the ceremony on behalf of LCC. Dr. Torgerson was appointed by the CLS Board of Regents in 2015 to serve as Rektor of the Seminary in the Ukraine for this cohort of students.

In two annual events Lutheran Church–Canada received five church workers and sent an additional six into the field for a year of vicarage in preparation for the pastoral ministry.

Concordia Lutheran Seminary, Edmonton held its Sacred Convocation, Thursday, May 24 at Bethel Lutheran Church in nearby Sherwood Park, Alta. During the service three men received their Master of Divinity degrees and accepted placements in parishes:

Kai Buck Peace, Trail/St. Peter, Castlegar, B.C.

EDMONTON – Regents from both Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) seminaries, Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary (CLTS), St. Catharines and Concordia Lutheran Seminary (CLS), Edmonton, met for their annual joint meeting January 30, 2018 in Edmonton as outlined in their 2011 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
