Christ Lutheran Church, Grand Forks, BC
For four weeks in June of this year, I had the privilege of working with Samaritan’s Purse, doing disaster relief following catastrophic flooding in Grand Forks, British Columbia. The experience was profoundly satisfying, empowering and humbling.
Grand Forks is located at the confluence of the Granby and Kettle Rivers in the southern interior of British Columbia. Spring flooding along river banks is a common event, usually with little or no permanent damage to park and recreation sites along the rivers. Building in the flood …

Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “Flight into the invisible is a denial of the call. A community of Jesus which seeks to hide itself has ceased to follow Him.” St. Paul writes, “We were buried with Jesus through baptism into death in order that, just as …

EDMONTON – Dr. Richard Starke, MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster and member of First Lutheran Church, Lloydminster, made a Member’s Statement in the Alberta Legislature on October 31, 2017 to mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
“Five hundred years ago today an unknown German priest in a backwater town wanted to start a discussion,” Dr. Starke explained. “That priest was Martin Luther. Today, I join with my fellow Lutherans worldwide to mark the anniversary of Luther’s courageous act of defiance—an act that triggered the Reformation and changed the course of world history.” …

HIGH PRAIRIE, Alta. – On September 12, 2017, Redeemer Lutheran Church in High Prairie, Alberta celebrated the ordination and installation of Rev. Terry Goerz, the first graduate with a regionally remote ministry focus from Lutheran Church–Canada’s (LCC) Pastors with Alternate Training (PAT) program.
At seventy years old, Rev. Goerz is not your typical new pastor. “Some pastors are described as second career pastors,” he notes. “I am a fifth career pastor.” In 2011, Goerz retired from High Prairie School Division after 21 years as their Director of Facilities. He is also …

Every congregation I have been a part of, whether as a lay member or pastor, has been my family. It was in the presence of my church family that my faith was born and confirmed. Over the years, it has been through my church family that the Spirit of the Lord has nurtured my faith in the triune God.
My church family is where I, and my wife and children, have been loved and accepted. Our church family are the people we have often wept and laughed with …

BC Interior – Wildfires raging in the British Columbia interior are affecting Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) congregations. Rev. Noel Smith, who serves St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Williams Lake, reported he is part of the evacuation of more than 10,000 residents. The pastor noted in a July 17 post on Facebook that “the good people of our sister church in Kamloops are organizing a list of people willing to open their homes to those now stranded in Kamloops.” Kamloops is almost 300 km southeast of Williams Lake. He reported that some …
