The new website from the ABC District.

ONLINE – “On January 13, 1914, Earnest Shackelton published the following notice: ‘Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages. Bitter cold. Long months of complete darkness. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.’ Five thousand applications were received in response to this notice from which 27 men were selected for the great adventure of crossing Antarctica. What in the world would possess so many men to volunteer willingly to serve in such a venture?”

“How would one advertise for a pastor or a deacon? Perhaps it might read in this way: ‘An opportunity not to be served, but to serve others with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. No opportunity for fame or fortune. Wages and benefits provided but you will not get rich. Rigorous academic preparation and formation required. Looking for people who have a sense of God’s calling to be servants for Jesus’ sake.”

So reads the front page of a new website entitled Is God Calling Me? The website, a production of the Alberta-British Columbia District, is designed as a resource for people considering a career as a pastor, a Director of Parish Services, or as a Lutheran teacher. In addition to providing information on LCC’s college and seminaries, and information on financial support for students pursuing church work, the website features the testimonies of current church workers (and students studying for church work) on how they recognized God’s call in their lives.

“Is God calling you to serve as a pastor, a Lutheran teacher, or a Director of Parish Services,” promotional materials ask. “Or do you know of someone who should consider a vocation as a full-time church-worker? We want to challenge you and assist you as you work through these questions.”

The website’s address is www.IsGodCallingMe.ca.

Christians considering a career as church workers may also wish to read this feature article from January/February 2013 issues of The Canadian Lutheran. Entitled “Called by God,” the article helps Christians consider whether God might be calling them to serve the Church as a pastor or other church worker. Prospective seminary students may also want to read “Life in Seminary,” a series of interviews with four students of different backgrounds and ages about how they ended up studying for the pastoral ministry and what seminary life is really like.
