Lutheran relief agency continues support for Haiti

WINNIPEG – A year after an earthquake devastated Haiti, Canadian Lutheran World Relief continued its support of the Caribbean county by sending a fully-loaded 40-foot shipping container. The January 21 shipment contained everything from quilts to medical equipment and 2000 We Care bags. The supplies are expected to arrive in Haiti mid-to-late March.

In October 2010, CLWR put out an “Advent Challenge” to congregations of Lutheran Church–Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada for donations of school supplies. As part of the appeal, a special request was made soccer balls. At the end of a September visit to Haiti CLWR’s Director of Community Relations Tom Brook spoke to a young boy who asked for only one thing:  “Please send me a ball.’

Distribution of We Care bags will include schools operated by the Lutheran Church of Haiti which is supported by Canada’s Haiti Lutheran Mission Society.

The medical supplies include 25 hospital beds and seven wheelchairs provided through CLWR’s partnership with International H.O.P.E.

“As Haitians continue the difficult process of rebuilding their lives and livelihood, even a year after the earthquake the needs of that region are still great,” says Brook. “Schools, although temporary, are available for use in Haiti, but school supplies are still needed.”

The shipment’s total value is approximately $80,000 CDN.
