Pentecost festival in Costa Rica

Three confirmads: Rosario, Xiomara and Priscilla

Many Lutheran congregations across Canada conduct the Rite of Confirmation on Pentecost. LCC’s mission in Costa Rica also took the theme of the festival to hold a Pentecost weekend celebration, Saturday June 12 in Cartago, San Jose.

For the 45 people attending, LCC missionary Pastor Edmundo Retana described the celebration as “wonderful and intense…filled with the love of Jesus and the meaning of community.” During the special service the pastor confirmed three new members who also received the Lord’s Supper.

The president of Iglesia Luterana Sínodo de Nicaragua, Rev. Luiz Turcios travelled from Chinandega, Nicaragua to install Betty Retana as Costa Rica’s first LCC deaconess.

“The growth of Christ’s Church in Costa Rica is steady,” said Rev. Dr. Leonardo Neitzel, LCC’s mission executive. “God has blessed us with a Costa Rican pastor who knows the people and is excited about reaching out with the Gospel.”

Pastor Edmundo echoes Dr. Neitzel’s observations when he says,“I thank God for the privilege of communicating the Gospel of grace and salvation in my country; for the results and the gifts of our community.”
