Rebuilding Fort McMurray: Call for Volunteers

CLWR-logoFORT MCMURRAY, Alberta – Canadian Lutheran World Relief, in partnership with Lutheran Church–Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, is implementing a project in Alberta to support people who lost their homes due to the 2016 Fort McMurray wild fire. As part of this response, CLWR is providing funds to Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) who will be building 6-7 homes for those in need.

MDS works with volunteers to respond to disasters all over Canada and the United States, and CLWR is hoping to promote this to Lutherans who may be interested in volunteering. For the project CLWR is supporting, there are work sites in Fort McMurray, Alberta and in Hague, Saskatchewan (due to a shortage of supplies in Fort McMurray, Ready-To-Move houses will be built here.)

Individuals or a representative acting on behalf of a group can register as volunteers by visiting this website. To see how many volunteers are still needed for Fort McMurrary or Hague for any particular week, see the drop-down list entitled “Indicate where you are willing to go” on the same page.

Volunteers are responsible for paying for their own travel to the work site, but food and lodging will be provided to volunteers free of charge for the week. This is an opportunity open to adults, and youth under 18 (provided they are accompanied by a responsible adult), so this could also be a great opportunity for church youth groups.

Further information on volunteering with MDS is available in the MDS Volunteer Guide.
