Second workshop planned for French hymnal

With Lutheran Church–Canada’s convention action to recommend the French hymnal Liturgies et cantiques luthériens (LCL) to congregations for use, comes word that the committee responsible for creating the hymnal is holding a second workshop on its use.

Scheduled for August 22-24, 2011 in Montreal, the event is designed to raise awareness of LCL’s availability and to train lay people and clergy in its use and application, especially for the Daily Offices. It will also serve to gather and network organizations working with francophone Lutherans in Canada, the USA, and Haiti.

Cantor Phillip Magness

The workshop presenter, Phillip Magness, is cantor at Bethany Lutheran Church in Napierville, Illinois. A frequent speaker on the liturgy and hymns at worship conferences, he also conducts workshops in Africa introducing Liturgies et cantiques luthériens to the church.

Lutherans in Canada are beginning to feel the impact of the hymnal. Delegates to LCC’s convention in June sang hymns from LCL; the committee has provided English translations for Christmas and Easter hymns unique to the hymnal; and French-language services using LCL have been held throughout Quebec as well as Edmonton and Regina.

First printed in the fall of 2009, the hymnal project received support from the Marvin A. Schwan Foundation, Concordia Publishing House, a generous anonymous donor, the work of LCC pastors, Rev. Dr. David Somers and Rev. Dr. David Saar, and volunteer revisers and proofreaders. Sales from the first printing permitted a second printing in 2010.
