LCC Statement on the Mass Shooting at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in BC
“When aimless violence takes those we love,
When random death strikes childhood’s promise down,
When wrenching loss becomes our daily bread,
We know, O God, You leave us not alone.” (LSB 764.1)
Sadly, those words of the hymn became all too real this past Tuesday, February 10, when a number of children were senselessly murdered by a deranged individual at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in BC. I thus call upon all members of our Lutheran Church—Canada congregations to lift up in prayer those who have been impacted by this horrendous act of violence.
“Almighty God, merciful Father, Your thoughts are not our thoughts, and Your ways are not our ways. In Your wisdom which is beyond our understanding You have permitted this tragic act of violence and murder to befall the community of Tumbler Ridge, BC. Keep those who are in shock and mourning over this tragedy from despair. Hold them in Your loving arms, and in due time bring consolation and healing to the bereaved. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who suffered and died as the atoning sacrifice for our sins and the sins of the whole world that we might have life with You now and forever. Amen.”
