Zion in Plumas marking 125th anniversary

PLUMAS, Man. – The congregation of Zion Lutheran Church thanks and praises God the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ who established Zion Lutheran first in Tupper, Manitoba, and then in the village of Plumas some 125 years ago.

The foundation laid by the first settlers is still felt here to this day. Their faith in Christ Jesus was passed on from one generation to another, allowing this humble congregation to endure for 125 years. Although Zion has faced many trials over the years, she has also been very blessed with times of joy.

For 125 years the Word of God has been taught and proclaimed and the Sacraments administered according to the command and promise of Jesus Christ. For all of God’s richest blessings, the members of Zion “shout and sing for joy”—their anniversary theme verse from Isaiah 12:6.

Whatever the next 125 years bring, the church is still teaching the next generation the same thing their parents were taught: the Word of God. They hope their humble efforts for Zion’s upcoming anniversary this summer will show God’s grace at work in the hearts of the people and pastors associated with Zion Lutheran.

Over the last number of decades, church member Bernice Walker has recorded, photographed, and catalogued Zion’s events and history. All the precious memories of Zion’s history were published in photo albums for family and friends to enjoy.

In preparation for Zion’s 125th anniversary, Walker and Rev. James Vosper were commissioned by Zion’s Anniversary Committee to write A Narrative History of Zion’s last 25 years. After a first draft, Rev. Vosper suggested offering the history booklet as an audio book, with Walker narrating. They hope to have hard copies of the booklet available soon, along with the audio book that will be released on Zion’s YouTube channel before the anniversary in July.
