LCC Thanks God for CLTS’ 50 Years of Service

WINNIPEG – On June 13, Lutheran Church–Canada’s convention passed a resolution calling on LCC to give thanks to God for the 50 years during which Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary (CLTS) has been a blessing to the church. After the resolution passed unanimously, President Teuscher acknowledged the presence of Central District President Emeritus Thomas Prachar, graduate of CLTS’s first class of 1980.

The 2026-27 academic year will mark 50 years since Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary (CLTS) in St. Catharines, Ontario, held its first classes in the basement of Resurrection Lutheran Church. Over the past half-century, the seminary has blossomed, with some 240 pastors and laypeople graduating from the seminary to serve the church.

The seminary’s journey officially began in 1975 when LCMS authorized Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne to found an extension site in Canada. The following year at the Ontario District’s convention, St. Catharines was chosen as the site for the new seminary. CLTS was incorporated by provincial charter in November 1976. It became affiliated with Brock University in 1982, built its own building on Brock’s campus in 1983, and most recently in 2024 became independent and was granted authority to issue degrees under its own name.

On Friday evening, there was a reunion of CLTS alumni at the convention, with about 40 attending. There will be more opportunities to celebrate when the seminary hosts a three-day event from October 19-21.
