LCC to Study Use of the Term ‘Bishop’
WINNIPEG – After discussion, Lutheran Church–Canada’s convention on June 14 resolved to initiate a study of the use of the term ‘bishop,’ as well as the question of time limits on calls for synodical and regional church leaders.
An amended form of Resolution 26.2.01a “To Study the Term ‘Bishop’ and the Time Limit of Calls” was adopted. The resolution grew out of two other proposed resolutions which were not voted on. The first of these had encouraged the adoption of the term ‘bishop.’ The second had encouraged the removal of time-limited calls for the synodical president and regional pastors. (The resolutions did not call for any change to the duties and responsibilities of these offices.)
The new resolution instead charges LCC’s Commission on Theology and Church Relations (CTCR) with producing study materials on these issues, to be distributed across synod at least two years prior to the next convention so that they can be “used for study at circuit forums, Winkels, pastoral conferences, and congregational studies.”
