Making Convention Look Easy: The Work Behind the Gathering

As delegates departed following the conclusion of Lutheran Church–Canada’s convention, much attention naturally focused on elections, resolutions, worship services, and the decisions made by the assembly. Less visible, however, was the work of the many individuals who spent months, and in some cases years, preparing for the event.

For the administrative team, the successful conclusion of convention brought a mixture of relief and gratitude.

“I’m happy. Pleasantly exhausted,” said one organizer, Angela Honey. “I’m relieved, but I’m also very happy,” chimed in another organizer, Vira Atkins, who was experiencing LCC’s convention for the first time. The Convention Manager, Iris Barter, added her reflection, “I’m tired, but I’m happy with the way everything came together. It was a success, I think. A great success.”

That success did not happen overnight. Planning for the convention began nearly three years ago with the booking of facilities and the establishment of partnerships that would prove essential in the months leading up to the gathering.

One recurring theme among organizers was the importance of relationships. From the hotel staff and convention service providers to technical partners and volunteers, convention organizers emphasized that successful events are built through collaboration and trust.

“When there’s glitches or hiccups or we have to pivot because something has had to shift, the partners are just able to move with us and do so happily,” Honey noted.

That flexibility proved invaluable. Whether adjusting meal schedules for hundreds of attendees, responding to technical challenges, or accommodating last-minute requests, organizers relied on a network of partners willing to work together toward a common goal.

Attendees may have noticed the smooth registration process, clearly marked name tags, seating assignments, and schedules. Behind each of those details were months of preparation, testing, revisions, and coordination.

The convention also depended heavily upon volunteers, ambassadors, and delegates who stepped forward whenever assistance was needed. Organizers expressed particular gratitude for the many individuals who willingly served behind the scenes, often without recognition.

Perhaps the greatest compliment organizers can receive is that the event appeared effortless.

“It looks easy, and that’s our goal—to make it look easy,” Barta remarked.

Yet behind every meal, meeting room, worship service, presentation, and vote stood countless hours of planning and cooperation. As convention concluded, delegates had reason to be thankful not only for the work accomplished on the convention floor, but also for the dedicated staff, volunteers, and partners whose efforts made the gathering possible. We salute Iris Barta, Angela Honey, Vira Atkins, Tanya Dreiko, and the myriad other staff members, ambassadors, and partners who volunteered their time, energy, and resources so Lutheran Church–Canada Convention 2026 could be a success!
