“In the mid-90s, the world witnessed a war of ethnic cleansing and genocide between Bosnians, Serbians, and Croatians in what is now remembered as the Bosnian War (1992-1995). While not a war of religion in the strict sense, the various sides of the war represented Muslims (Bosnians), Orthodox Christians (Serbians), and Catholics (Croatians). War of any kind is terrible and atrocious, full of death and violence committed by humans against other humans. War is humanity in its worst form.

A Muslim woman who survived the war reported several unspeakable things that happened to her. Perhaps the most moving part of her story is the sense of vengeance that her experiences produced. A teacher, the woman had formerly been moved to foster a sense of love among her pupils. Using literature, she had “taught them how to love.” Yet, during the war she found herself a victim both of her former pupils and fellow colleagues who shouted derogatory remarks over her while they beat her and did many other worse things. She even named her child to represent her hatred of those who perpetrated crimes against her. In naming him such, she nursed him with milk that flowed full of hatred.”
