Convention Sessions Highlight Mission, Catechesis, and Welcoming Communities
National—While conventions are often associated with elections, reports, and resolutions, some of the most meaningful discussions take place in smaller settings where delegates and guests can explore important ministry opportunities in greater depth. Several convention information sessions this year will focus on the church’s mission in the world — proclaiming Christ, welcoming newcomers, and strengthening congregations for outreach and witness.
One featured session, Missions — The Church in Motion, explores both the theology and practice of mission work within Lutheran Church–Canada. Participants will hear examples of domestic and international mission efforts currently taking place across the synod and around the world. The session highlights how congregations, strengthened through Word and Sacrament ministry, naturally reach outward in love and mercy to share the Gospel and serve their neighbours.
Presenters hope participants will leave encouraged by the breadth of mission activity already underway and inspired to consider new opportunities for mission within their own congregational and vocational contexts. This introduces another session The Holy Ordinary, which will invite attendees to explore the ways in which their vocation is not just about a job or career but are ‘masks of God’ used by Him to provide and serve His Church.
As congregations increasingly welcome people from diverse backgrounds, another session addresses the opportunities and challenges connected to catechesis and integration. Welcoming and Catechizing Newcomers explores practical ways congregations can faithfully teach and integrate people from a wide range of theological, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds while remaining firmly grounded in God’s Word and Lutheran confession.
The session encourages congregations to see these encounters not only as opportunities to teach newcomers, but also as occasions to deepen and renew the faith and theological understanding of longtime members. In much the same way, Together One as the Body of Christ explores how to handle the shortage of pastoral and financial resources, by congregations working together in service.
Several presenters note that these conversations are especially important as congregations across Canada continue to encounter shifting demographics, growing cultural diversity, and renewed opportunities for outreach. Discussions will include practical approaches to hospitality, teaching, congregational life, and communication that strengthen both mission and congregational unity.
Together, these sessions reflect Lutheran Church–Canada’s continued commitment to proclaiming the Gospel, strengthening congregations, and equipping God’s people for faithful witness in communities across Canada and beyond.
