From Taiwan to Richmond: A Deep Dive into Lutheran Theology

RICHMOND, B.C. – What happens when a faithful missionary travels from Taiwan to Metro Vancouver, a fellowship hall is packed with over 50 eager participants, and a bounty of delicious food is served? You get a vibrant, joyful Saturday that proves historic Reformation theology is very much alive and kicking in the local Mandarin-speaking community!

On May 30, 2026, Trinity Lutheran Church hosted a special Mandarin-language seminar, “Understanding Lutheranism,” featuring Rev. Dr. Michael Paul. An LCMS missionary, seminary professor, and Chinese translator living in Taiwan, Dr. Paul brought deep theological insights wrapped in masterful Mandarin.

He skillfully tackled foundational truths like Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone), reminding attendees that the Word of God holds its own power to spark true faith. The heart of the day, however, was unlocking the distinction between Law and Gospel. Dr. Paul offered a beautifully simple takeaway: the Law tells us what we must do for God, but the Gospel tells us what God has already done for us.

Between the rich teaching and the wonderful lunch prepared by the volunteers, the energy in the room was contagious. Attendees were so enthusiastic that many are clamoring for an expanded, two or three-day intensive seminar in the near future!
