LCC Calls for Prayer Following Tragedy at CFB Wainwright
National—Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) joins in prayer for all those affected by the tragic explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright, which claimed seven lives and left many others injured.
LCC chaplains serving with the Canadian Armed Forces are responding to the tragedy, providing care and support to those directly affected, including the bereaved families, the injured, military members, first responders, caregivers, and leadership.
“As I receive the reports from our Division Chaplains, I am hearing about support to the notification teams, the fallen, the injured, the families, the members, first responders, caregivers, and leadership,” said Major, the Rev. Dr. Victor E. Morris, CD, Acting Command Chaplain of the Canadian Army. “We should be very proud of them as they hold the hands of those going through this.”
As LCC weeps with those who weep, West Regional Pastor, Rev. Michael Schutz initiated a region-wide prayer of Psalm 46, which has since circulated beyond the region as we join together as one.
LCC particularly asks for prayers for its brother in Christ, Padre Greg Lutz—uninjured, but serves as a chaplain at the CFB Wainwright location—and for all chaplains called upon to bring comfort and spiritual care in the aftermath of this tragedy.
As Rev. Don Schiemann reminds us, such moments reveal the brokenness of our world and our need for God’s mercy. We pray that the Lord would sustain those who mourn, strengthen the injured, and grant wisdom and compassion to all who are serving those affected.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Kyrie eleison!
