LCC Calls for Prayer as Wildfire Forces Evacuations in the Okanagan

National—Lutheran Church–Canada is calling for urgent prayer as wildfires that started the night of Friday, August 7, forced evacuations throughout the town of Summerland and surrounding areas, where St. John’s Lutheran Church is located.

According to Rev. Michael Schutz—Pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church, Penticton, and LCC’s outgoing Vice-President—while the fire has slowed, it’s still moving north along the Okanagan Valley towards the Peachland area.

Many LCC members live in the areas affected by the wildfire. At this time, the rapidly developing situation means that the full extent of its impact on LCC members and congregations is not yet known.

Members in that region affected by the wildfires may contact the pastors at Concordia Lutheran Church in Penticton. Pastors Michael Schutz, Jefrey Koenig, and Scott Gamble have gathered there, where many evacuees have already sought refuge. They are providing spiritual care, comfort, and support to those affected by the evacuation.

“We are thankful that the Lord has provided these men to serve their members and the citizens of their communities in the midst of this great tragedy,” says Rev. Robert Mohns, West Regional Pastor.

As communities face uncertainty and displacement, LCC asks its members across Canada to pray for all those affected by the wildfire—for safety and protection, for those who have lost homes or property, for emergency personnel and volunteers, and for pastors and congregations as they care for their neighbours.

Please also pray for the many LCC members living in the affected communities, and for those who may be facing uncertainty about their homes, families, and livelihoods.
