Lutheran pro-life group speaks up for banned university club

A decision by the Carleton University Student Association (CUSA) to ban a right-to-life group from membership is a restriction on free speech, say Lutherans for Life–Canada (LFL-C).

According to media reports, CUSA decided Nov. 15 to decertify Carleton Lifeline for its pro-life views.

The student association told Carleton Lifeline that opposing abortion violated the association’s anti-discrimination policy.

If Lifeline amended its constitution to meet the association’s criteria by Nov. 18, Lifeline could receive certification for the semester, said Khaldoon Bushnaq, CUSA’s vice-president of internal affairs.

“Lutherans for Life–Canada is very concerned about the developments at Carleton University, not only in the silencing of the pro-life view but also in the restricting of free speech,” said Cliff Pyle, president of LFL–C.

“We as LFL-C strongly support these students and their courageous stand for life. Even though we do not work directly with these organizations, we support and encourage others in this difficult task.”

Pyle reiterated LFL–C’s vision statement: “to be a biblical, pro-life voice and resource to Lutherans and through them transform society; we as Lutherans must be a light in an age of darkness, and we must not put our lamp under a bushel. “

He said all Lutherans should be concerned by what is happening in Canadian universities and should make their voices known.

“By God’s grace we can make a difference,” he said.

On Nov. 19, the lawyer for Carleton Lifeline threatened to take court action against CUSA if it didn’t reverse its ban.
