EDMONTON – In an e-mail to President Robert Bugbee, LCC President Emeritus Edwin Lehman reports that he returned home March 20 after almost seven weeks in hospital. He had undergone surgery in mid-February to remove a cancerous kidney, and is now gradually regaining strength.

“As you might imagine, this has been a life-altering experience for me and our family,” Dr. Lehman wrote in his email. “The compassion of our heavenly Father was something that sustained us every day, and the countless prayers, cards, greetings, visits, and phone calls left me completely overwhelmed. I wish I could personally thank each and every person, but that is not possible. God knows who they are, and I ask for His blessings upon them.”

The staff at LCC’s national headquarters in Winnipeg had prayed repeatedly for Dr. Lehman and his wife, Marge, during this time. In addition, many local congregations across the country were including him in their public prayers each week after LCC issued a call to prayer via email and The Canadian Lutheran online.

Dr. Lehman has a long record of service to God’s people. He served congregations in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia before becoming President of the ABC District in 1978. Ten years later, he was elected the first national President of Lutheran Church–Canada at its constituting convention, and continued in that role until his 1996 retirement. Since that time, he has been active as an interim President of Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Edmonton, and until recently with the governing board of the Concordia Lutheran Mission Society (CLMS).
