Six CCCA Awards for The Canadian Lutheran

CANADA – The Canadian Christian Communicators Association (CCCA) held its annual Awards of Excellence on April 7, 2021, and The Canadian Lutheran received six awards: First Place (From the Editor), Second Place (Media Review), Third Place (Magazine Feature), Third Place (Biblical/Theological Reflection), Third Place (Opinion), and Third Place (Magazine Front Cover – Circulation over 10,000).

“It’s gratifying to see our contributors recognized in this way,” said Mathew Block, editor of The Canadian Lutheran. “We work hard to produce a quality magazine that informs and encourages our readers in their faith. These awards are a testament to the skill and effort of everyone involved in bringing Lutheran Church–Canada’s national magazine to congregations six times a year.”

Mathew Block received first place in the “From the Editor” category for his column “A Long Lent.” The category judge called it “well thought out” and “well executed,” saying it was “an excellent entry into the issue’s content, specifically geared to help the readership face ‘the long Lent’” occasioned by the pandemic.

Rev. Ted Giese received second place in the Media Review category for his review of the Tom Hanks film Greyhound. The category judge called the piece “an exceptional critical commentary on the film,” providing “fascinating insights into the making of a war film.”

Mathew Block received third place in the Magazine Features category for his article “Online Churches, Robot Priests,” which highlighted—in advance of the pandemic—both the opportunities and dangers associated with a devotional life pursued online. The category judge called it “original, timely, a little avantgarde, and a great intro to the topic.”

Rev. Dr. Thomas M. Winger took third place in the Biblical/Theological Reflection category for his article “Lord, Teach Us to Pray.” The category judge praised the piece, saying “It gives well-written theological reflections as well as practical guidelines on Christian prayer.” The judge further noted that the article, though written “in the Lutheran tradition” nevertheless “has broad ecumenical appeal.”

Dr. L. Block received third place in the Opinion category, for her article “Misguided Mercy: Understanding Canada’s End of Life Legislation.” “The writer tackles an emotional, complex, difficult subject with grace and candor,” the category judge said.

Finally, Alex Steinke, Lutheran Church–Canada’s Communications Director and designer of The Canadian Lutheran, tied for third place in the Magazine Front Cover – Circulation over 10,000 category. The winning design comes from the November/December 2020 issue and features the theme “The Word Became Flesh.” The category judge called it “a very strong, very intelligent cover.” “The page has been considered like a poster,” the judge continued, “which is a very effective model for a magazine cover.”
