The role of a Missionary-at-Large

QUEBEC – On Sunday, September 25, 2022, Rev. Walta Clercius was installed as Assistant Missionary-at-Large (MAL) for Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC)’s French Ministries. The installation services was held at l’Église luthérienne de la Sainte Trinité (Québec City).

Pastor Clercius served as a pastor of l’Église luthérienne d’Haïti, first making contact with LCC when he and his wife arrived as doctoral students at Université de Laval several years ago.

Pastor Clercius’ role will include assisting the development of French ministries, primarily by officiating at Sunday services, but also doing outreach among students and fellow countrymen and participating in studies and daily offices online with the wider francophone community of LCC. This broad description of duties fits the task of a MAL.

“The primary objective of the MAL is to lead people into the sacramental life of the church so that they may receive Christ’s Life-giving means of grace and enjoy communion with God and His people.” — Rev. M.L. Smith, LCC Director of Missions

LCC Director of Missions, Rev. M.L. Smith, describes a Missionary-at-Large as someone who is sent out to evangelize and serve a specific designated area, language group or ethnic community. “Whereas a MAL may be called upon to evangelize and serve a particular region or group, the missionary is expected to proclaim the gospel whenever the opportunity presents itself to whomever the Lord leads him,” Rev. Smith said. “The primary objective of the MAL is to lead people into the sacramental life of the church so that they may receive Christ’s Life-giving means of grace and enjoy communion with God and His people.”

This broad liberating notion is a good thing to know as LCC has now installed its third Missionary-at-Large in Quebec, working alongside MALs Rev. Marco Antonio Jacobsen and Rev. Dr. David Somers; as well as the resident pastor in Quebec City, Rev. Frank Morgret.

Mission situations are characterized by the unexpected and MALs are expected to respond to any given situation that may arise with the sharing and the application of the Gospel by any appropriate means leading to Word and Sacrament ministry.

A case in point of a serendipitous development in Quebec is the arrival of five Lutheran Brazilian families over the past 7 years—not because of any LCC outreach but simply, and importantly, because LCC was present in Quebec City! These families sought us out through a variety of circumstances (3 out of four connected with the church online). Preaching, teaching, and confessing the True Faith is the response we are called to give in thought, word and deed, by what we do and do not do.

We welcome Pastor Clercius and his family into the Canada-wide LCC family!
