CLS President Gimbel to retire, call for nominations for Interim President

EDMONTON – Concordia Lutheran Seminary (CLS) in Edmonton has announced that President James Gimbel will retire at the completion of the 2023-24 academic year, and is issuing a call for nominations for the role of Interim President during the transition.

In a release, CLS expressed “deep thanks and appreciation for his exceptional service to the Church” and called on members of Lutheran Church–Canada to “join us in offering up prayers of thanksgiving to our good and gracious God for President Gimbel’s faithful leadership to Concordia Lutheran Seminary as its sixth President.”

CLS further stated that the Board has approved a sabbatical program for Dr. Gimbel during the 2023-24 academic year as part of his service to CLS, during which time he will also assist with the leadership transition as needed.

The Board of Regents has identified the next few years as a time of intentional review of the needs of the Church and of opportunities for future pastoral and diaconal formation. To that end, CLS intends to call an Interim President for a two-year term, beginning with the 2023-24 academic year.

The church is invited to nominate candidates for the position of Interim President, with nominations due by March 15, 2023. Further information can be seen in the full “Call for Nominations” document.
